Occasionally foundation doctors may wish to take time out of training for a number of reasons such as;
- work or travel
- domestic reasons
- health reasons
- personal reasons
The duration of time out of the foundation programme is usually 12 months to avoid individuals becoming out of phase with the foundation programme.
Foundation schools typically only approve TOFP at the end of F1 training so that a year out is taken between this time and the beginning of F2. Time out during the F1 or F2 programme is generally only considered in exceptional circumstances.
F1 doctors should also be aware that the length of time doctors is allowed to hold provisional GMC registration is limited to a maximum of 3 years and 30 days. Further information can be found at GMC | Provisional Registration.
