Study Leave

NHS England is committed to supporting resident doctors and dental trainees in undertaking study leave activities to achieve their specialty curriculum and support professional development. Study leave funding is available to cover the following activities:

  • Courses/education activities to support resident doctors and dental trainees to achieve the curriculum,
  • Courses to help prepare for postgraduate exams,
  • Discretionary courses that add value to doctors and dental trainees individually and support the wider system.

For more guidance, including what is and isn’t included from Study Leave funding, please visit the South East Study Leave webpages.

Applying for Discretionary Study Leave

If you are a GP Registrar working in a GP Practice placement or Integrated Training Post (ITP), please complete the online application form.

Before submitting a discretionary study leave request, GP Registrars must:

  • Discuss the proposed course with their Educational Supervisor (ES) and/or Training Programme Director (TPD), and
  • Ensure an educator note has been recorded on their portfolio confirming this discussion. Applications submitted without evidence of this discussion may experience delays in processing.

GP Registrars currently placed in hospital posts should continue to use the existing study leave process via their employing Trust.
