Inter Programme Transfers (IPT)

Inter Programme Transfers (IPT)

If you are a GP Specialty Trainee in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex (KSS) GP School and wish to be considered for an IPT to continue your GP training in another KSS programme, you will need to complete an application form.

Please note that the application window are as follows:

  • Apply in February for a August IPT start
  • Apply in August for a February or April IPT start

Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for a transfer is determined by the same criteria as Inter Deanery Transfers and trainees will have to complete 12 months in post before they can move. Transfers are also subject to the trainee receiving a satisfactory ARCP outcome.

  • Criterion 1A – you have developed a disability as defined by the Equality Act (2010)
  • Criterion 1B – you have developed a condition relating to mental health
  • Criterion 2 – you are the primary carer for someone who has a significant ill health and/or is disabled as defined by the Equality Act 2010
  • Criterion 3 – you are the parent or legal guardian of a child under the age of 18 whose caring responsibilities have changed
  • Criterion 4 – you have had a significant change in personal circumstances due to a committed relationship
  • Criterion 5 – you require a transfer to another KSS programme to continue your training for any other reason not covered by Criteria 1-4

For criterion 1 to 4, changes to personal circumstances must have occurred before submitting your IPT application. Applications cannot be based on expected or anticipated future events.

In addition, even if a transfer is agreed by the Training Programme Directors (TPDs) where the trainee is based, the transfer can go ahead only if the receiving programme area has the capacity to do this. Training vacancies in other programme areas may not be readily available and arrangements may therefore take some time to set up. Please note that only transfers that are arranged through the KSS IPT process can be honoured.

Transfers for the final year of GP training (ST3) are usually easier to organise than for ST2; finding the appropriate combination of hospital posts for a ST2 GP trainee who wants to transfer (and who has already done certain posts) can be very difficult.
