Inter Deanery Transfers (IDT)
The National Inter Deanery Transfer (IDT) has been established to support GP Specialty Trainees who have either had a significant or unforeseen change in circumstances since accepting an offer of a post on a training programme, which requires a move to a different region.
The national process is aimed at delivering a user-friendly and transparent transfer process, ensuring consistent and robust decision making and providing a single source of information for all stakeholders.
It should be recognised that transfers are not an entitlement. IDTs will depend on compliance with the eligibility criteria, evidence requirements and the availability of suitable posts in the region (or regions) to which you are applying to move.
We strongly advise trainees to read the guidance within the IDT website and the ‘Guide to Completing IDT Application & Supporting Documents (February 2025)’ before submitting an application.
Eligibility Criteria
- Criterion 1A – you have developed a disability as defined by the Equality Act (2010)
- Criterion 1B – you have developed a condition relating to mental health
- Criterion 2 – you are the primary carer for someone who has a significant ill health and/or is disabled as defined by the Equality Act 2010
- Criterion 3 – you are the parent or legal guardian of a child under the age of 18 whose caring responsibilities have changed
- Criterion 4 – you have had a significant change in personal circumstances due to a committed relationship
- Criterion 5 – you require a transfer to another region to continue your training for any other reason not covered by Criteria 1-4
For criterion 1 to 4, changes to personal circumstances must have occurred before submitting your IDT application. Applications cannot be based on expected or anticipated future events. In order to provide a consistent, transparent and robust process for all trainees, the National IDT team will make all decisions on eligibility and allocations in accordance with the published guidelines and criteria.
