Foundation Doctor Representatives

Feedback is a very important part of medical training. The KSS Foundation School is keen to ensure that the views of foundation doctors (FDs) are adequately represented at all the relevant local/national meetings.

About the role

KSS is a big school, and representatives are there to represent many colleagues in different trusts. This means communicating with individuals or other representatives, such as the FD representatives within each trust, and collating and summarising the information received so that a brief written (one page of A4) or verbal report can be provided.

KSS Foundation School Representatives will be expected to attend a variety of meetings, such as the national Foundation Doctor Advisory Board (FDAB), other relevant local meetings and help at different events such as the Programme Fair.

As part of your role, you will be expected to elicit feedback beforehand, and provide details of the main points in advance so that they can be discussed effectively at the meetings. Some representatives provide feedback to their colleagues after the meetings. We are happy to review the information for accuracy before it is sent out.

The groups above are concerned with foundation recruitment and training, rather than local employment issues. FDs with concerns such as hours, banding, accommodation etc should be advised to raise these locally with the relevant trust staff in the first instance.

Your name and email address are shared with the other School representatives, so they are able to contact you with any items for you to raise on their behalf.

Please note that the posts are unpaid, honorary roles. KSS is however, able to reimburse travel expenses for those FD Representatives who are required to travel to local and national meetings. Details on how to claim reimbursement will be sent on appointment.

How to apply

During August, foundation doctors are invited to express their interest in being a representative on various committees/groups by submitting a statement of up to 100 words, explaining why they wish to take part and how they would ensure that they represented the views of their peers.

For 2023, KSS will be appointing the following representatives.

2x F1 representatives

2x F2 representatives (noting only one position available for 2023)

1x Less than Full Time Representative (for both F1 and F2 cohorts)

1x Specialised (Academic) Foundation programme Representative (for both F1 and F2 cohorts)

By applying you agree that your email address can be shared with trust reps so they are able to provide you with feedback for the School committee meetings.

For continuity, the F1 Doctor Representatives generally will hold the role for the entire two years of their Foundation training in HEE KSS, moving to become the F2 Doctor Representative in their second year. They may of course, choose to step down from their role at the end of F1 if they wish. If a representative does give up their role in F1, the same application process will be used.
