Horus ePortfolio and Self Development

All new F1 doctors will be set up with a Horus ePortolio at the beginning of the training year. Your Medical education team in your employing trust will send you an account activation email, which you will need to activate before you can access your account. More information about Horus will be provided during shadowing.

Horus ePortfolio helps foundation doctors to plan their learning and to evidence progress with the Foundation Curriculum. It contains:

  • Personal Development Plans (PDPs)
  • A record of meetings with your educational and clinical supervisors
  • Supervised learning events (SLEs)
  • Feedback about you from your colleagues and placement supervision group
  • Reflective entries, summary narrative and other evidence
  • Sign-off documents

It is the responsibility of the foundation doctor to keep their Horus ePortfolio up to date. It will be reviewed throughout your training, and ultimately used to review evidence during the Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP).

Support Contacts

Foundation doctors who require help with Horus should first attempt to contact the Foundation Programme Coordinator in the postgraduate education team at their hospital. Alternatively, the foundation school team can help with Horus queries.

Please email us at england.kssfoundationenquiries.se@nhs.net

Foundation doctors can find simple easy to follow guides on the Horus ePortfolio Support site.

Self-development time

Self-development time (SDT) is intended to be used for formal meetings with supervisors, reflecting on clinical practice, use of e-portfolio, preparing/delivering teaching, quality improvement activity and career exploration.

More information on intended uses, and activities not intended for self-development time can be found on the NHS Employers and the Health Education England website (including specific guidance about self-development time (SDT) for foundation doctors in England).

Personal learning log

Personal learning log (formerly mandatory teaching log)

Please note: the personal learning log was previously named mandatory teaching log.

Foundation doctors (FDs) must log a minimum of 60 hours (during 12 months pro-rata) of learning during their FY1 and their FY2 rotation. At least 30 hours (during 12 months pro-rata) must be core foundation teaching.

The FD is responsible for ensuring they log the minimum number of learning hours in their e-portfolio. If there are concerns regarding engagement, the FTPD/T should discuss this with the FSD.

Statutory and mandatory training, induction sessions and ILS/ALS/equivalent cannot contribute to the 60 hours. A maximum of 6 hours (10%) of e-learning can contribute to the 60 hours. Horus counts the number of hours (core, non-core and total) logged, visible to all users with access to the relevant FD’s account.

These counts are also shown on the summary of evidence report and administrators will be able to report on their whole cohort.

Further guidance on the personal learning log is on the UKFPO website. Find out more about how to log personal learning on Horus

Guidelines

  • FDs are responsible for logging & tracking their own hours in their e-portfolio to the nearest half hour
  • No requirement to upload evidence of attendance at teaching sessions to the e-portfolio
  • Non-core learning must cover a range of topics relating to the broad range of foundation. Specialty-specific learning should be limited to no more than 5 of the 30 non-core hours.
  • Ideally learning should be undertaken during the dedicated teaching time for FDs or within designated self-development time (SDT).
  • Local education providers (LEPs Local Education Providers)/foundation schools are responsible for managing and quality assuring this process
  • If concerns regarding FD engagement with the above, the Foundation Programme Training Director/Tutor (FPTD/T) should discuss with the Foundation School Director.
  • SCRIPT modules are no longer mandated (we are now aligned with national ARCP requirements) but are strongly recommended as excellent learning materials
  • Up to 6 hours of e-learning, including SCRIPT, can be included within minimum 60 hours and recorded on the personal learning log, as per the information below from the Horus support website).
