Medical Training Review- South East England

Posted by: vdavis - Posted on:

NHS England are currently undertaking an engagement and listening exercise to consider the future of postgraduate medical training. This review will look at what resident doctors want from a training programme, alongside how we can provide medical care that is responsive to the needs of our patients. To reflect how medical training is changing, they are keen to hear from locally employed and SAS doctors, as well as resident doctors in training. We also welcome responses from educators and managers. Everyone’s opinion is appreciated.

You can find out more about the review in our short, two minute video below:

If you would like to find out more about the national training review, you can visit the national website here.

The review team want to hear from as many people as possible. Are you a resident doctor who has an opinion on how your training can be improved? A locally employed doctor who has taken a break from training and would like to explain why? Maybe you are an educational supervisor who feels elements of the system could work better? Or a health service manager who understands where changes could be made? Whatever your background, we want to hear from you!

Listening Events

We are held two online listening events in April to gather information from stakeholders across South East England. If you couldn’t make these dates, you can still have your say. We really want to hear your opinions, so please complete the following form before it closes on 21st April. In the “Role” section, please make sure you include whether you are a resident/SAS/locally employed doctor, a medical student, an educator or member of faculty, a health service manager in a Trust, ICS or NHSE, or another role:

Call for Evidence

The next stage of the review is a Call for Evidence. This will run from 8 April – 20 May 2025, and will form part of the Review’s evidence base, alongside the outputs of listening events, regional events and targeted focus groups with stakeholders, including patients and patient advocacy groups.

While the call for evidence is open to any member of the public, the questions are tailored towards those with experience of undertaking and/or delivering medical education. This exercise will therefore be supplemented by engagement, such as the focus groups, to widen opportunities for different groups to respond to the Review and capture a breadth and plurality of perspectives. The questions have been informed by listening events to date, academic literature, and a desktop review into the current challenges facing medical training and options for addressing these.

The link to the call for evidence can be found here. We would be very grateful if you could take time to complete it.
