CAST: AKT Masterclass – Organisational aspects of primary care

As ever, we’d recommend starting with the RCGP Curriculum – take a look here at the Professional Topic Guides section which covers this section of the AKT: https://www.rcgp.org.uk/mrcgp-exams/gp-curriculum/professional-topic-guides

Excluding the evidence-based practice (medical statistics) section, there are 5 areas covered:

  • Consulting in General Practice,
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion,
  • Improving quality, safety and prescribing,
  • Leadership and management,
  • Population and planetary health.

Read these parts of the Curriculum to gain an understanding of what the RCGP is looking for in trainees becoming GPs, then target each section in turn. You could use resources like the Oxford Handbook of General Practice, which covers this aspect of the RCGP Curriculum and is widely available in hospital libraries. There are also multiple online courses that you can access to cover this and the industry newspapers Pulse and GPOnline are also excellent resources.

Another important resource for this section of the exam is your GP trainer. You could suggest a tutorial covering concepts like the GP Contract or consultation models.

Once you’ve studied the above areas, you could consider using some targeted practice questions to see how this knowledge can be tested in the AKT, as well as to develop your exam technique.

Remember to keep making notes as you work your way through this part of the Curriculum. You can use mindmaps or flashcards to help consolidate your learning.
