Parking arrangements

On-site parking is available and parking permit applications will be included in your starter pack from Medical Resourcing. Parking charges are deducted from your monthly salary.

Foundation Specific

Medway currently provides 56 F1 and 43 F2 programmes (increasing to 55 in 2023) consisting of three 4-month placements. We offer a range of hospital-based specialties as well as community placements such as Psychiatry, GUM, Community Frailty and General Practice. We have often been able to accommodate changes to these rotations with internal swaps where educationally appropriate if possible.

Induction/shadowing arrangements

All F1 Doctors commencing at Medway undertake a mandatory extended induction programme commencing at the end of July. This includes the opportunity to ‘shadow’ the F1 from whom they will be taking over and gain an insight into the role and responsibilities of a postgraduate doctor. This also includes some simulation training scenarios. Additional shadowing can be arranged on request.

Tasters

A maximum of 5 days may be taken for a ‘taster’ either in the final 4-months of your F1 year or early within the foundation doctors F2 year. These should be arranged locally by foundation doctors at a time convenient to the specialty you are working in and the proposed Taster specialty. For further information and guidance please see the STFS website.

Simulation

The simulation suite at Medway, has a wide range of facilities and equipment available, such as operating theatres, A&E resuscitation bays, clinical wards and a GP room, Immersive room – to replicate a true to environment place to practice with a fully working clinical skills lab, with the ability to practice scrub technique, catheterisation, cannulation and so on.

Medway provides a comprehensive programme for the foundation doctors within this range of facilities.  Each foundation doctor will take part in a full day simulation and clinical skills session, the session is provided to a mix of both F1s and F2s.

Foundation doctors will take part in simulation based training focused on methods of Recognising and Managing the Deterioration of Patients using tools such as SBAR, A-E Assessment, NEWS Scoring and Human Factors.

Each case scenario lasts about 15–20 minutes and participants are asked to manage the patient’s presenting complaint as they would during any acute real-life situation. After each scenario, the tutors provided both the participants and observers with a debriefing session that would include giving feedback to the two doctors in training being assessed.

Educational Objectives:

  • Take a good targeted history, examination, and take appropriate investigations.
  • To Interpret clinical findings and results
  • To correctly manage and treat and refer when appropriate
  • To establish correct prioritisation with efficiency
  • To demonstrate appropriate communication skills with patient and colleagues

Following on from this, all foundation doctors will take part in a full day Human Factors session, this allows candidates to look at:

  • Helping understand a human factors perspective to investigating and learning from adverse events.
  • Provide key principles that can be applied to capture the human contribution to adverse events.
  • Learning the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of interactions among humans and other elements of a system, to help optimize human well-being and overall system performance.

For F1s, it is essential that they are provided with a full induction that will help them settle within the new environment and a fully immersive simulation/skills Induction session is provided to enable this.  All F1s will learn and put in to practice, varying systems such as management of defibrillators, electronic systems and massive blood loss protocol to make sure that they are comfortable in their new environment.

Foundation Doctor Forums

Foundation Doctor Forums are held regularly and F1 and F2 foundation doctor representatives are asked to attend.

Foundation doctor Representatives are also appointed to attend the Local Faculty Group for foundation doctors to ensure the foundation doctors’ voice is heard and represented at these meetings. Feedback will be gained by  canvasing opinions from peer colleagues by holding a forum three times a year, sometimes electronically, before the Local Faculty Group Meetings in November, March and June to gain feedback on foundation doctor concerns as well as highlighting positive elements for these meetings.

Educational and clinical supervision

Postgraduate doctors are allocated an educational supervisor for the year and for each placement they are placed with a consultant from their team for clinical supervision.

All educational supervisors have been suitably trained to become accredited supervisors.

Teaching programme

In addition to departmental teaching, foundation doctors receive weekly protected, bleep-free teaching on Tuesday afternoons for F1s and Thursday afternoons for F2s. Self-development time (SDT) is allocated following the weekly Foundation teaching sessions to complete statutory and mandatory training, portfolio, audit and research, etc. You will also be required to undertake ILS/ALS.

We look forward to meeting and working with you and hope you will enjoy your time with us at Medway.
