As a new named CS it is important that you are familiar with the role description and responsibilities that you have for your trainees. This is a key role in a trainee’s clinical development and there are not only administrative requirements for meetings and portfolio completions but pastoral care and support so that the trainee is able to carry out their contractual requirements as well as develop personally and professionally in their role. You will have done an initial training course already and must have agreed job plan time to carry out your role: and you will need to complete mandatory appraisal requirements in your role which are detailed in the ‘role description and appraisal requirements’ section of this site, as well as ensuring you have a PDP in this area of your scope of work to discuss at your next regular appraisal.
For your personal development as an educator we suggest you might like to:
- – browse the e-lfH catalogue for ideas on areas of medical education development
- – explore educator update opportunities your Trust provides by talking to PGME
- – keep an eye on this website and email advertisements from your PGME department about workshops and masterclasses in specific areas which might interest you
There is no substitute for talking to a more experienced educator to help you to decide which educational skills you feel you need to develop, for example your local faculty group lead (college tutor) or other local educationalist.
